In the past decade, the SkyJuice passive membrane technology has transformed lives across Mindanao, the Philippines. Through the Philippines’ “Safe Water for Every Child” (SWFEC) initiative, over 240 schools and villages now have sustainable access to safe drinking water. This groundbreaking effort not only addresses water scarcity but also improves public health and builds community resilience in disaster-prone and underserved areas.

The SWFEC initiative, supported by key partners such as Balay Mindanao, Disaster Aid Australia, local Rotary Clubs, and government agencies, has brought safe water to countless families. Over the next two years, it is proposed to extend its reach to an additional 100 schools and villages in Mindanao, continuing its mission of creating equitable access to safe drinking water.

A Collaborative Approach

SWFEC’s success is built on collaboration—the program partners with local governments and international organisations. The model prioritises long-term sustainability through local ownership and community engagement. David Langworthy, Senior Strategic Advisor for the SkyJuice Foundation, visited the Philippines in September 2024 to assess the initiative’s progress. His visit underscored the importance of involving local communities in the installation process.

“Communities that invest in their own water systems are more likely to take ownership of their maintenance and upkeep,” David explained. “This approach fosters sustainability and ensures these systems serve future generations.”

David’s visit also highlighted the cost-effectiveness of focusing on school-based installations, which leverage existing infrastructure to reduce expenses. By partnering with schools, SWFEC not only provides students with safe drinking water but also establishes hubs for community access during emergencies.

Responding to Disasters

The Philippines is frequently battered by typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. However, it has significantly benefited from SkyHydrant’s emergency response capabilities, and for over ten years, these filtration systems have delivered life-saving clean water to displaced populations. In the conflict-affected Bangsamoro Region, SkyHydrants have been instrumental in addressing the urgent needs of vulnerable communities.

Looking Ahead

Now, the vision is ambitious but achievable: to extend safe water coverage to another hundred schools and villages in the Mindanao region over the next two years. With existing local partners at the centre of the initiative, scaling up efforts, and leveraging community involvement, the initiative is positioned to tackle the challenges of water scarcity in the Philippines and improve public health for generations to come.
